Books Feed Your Head

It’s true, books really do, “Feed Your Head”.  In 1991 there was an award winning MTV campaign that promoted reading.  It was a revolutionary, ground breaking, and cutting edge style of mixing literature with a short film.  This was when MTV still contained the word “music” in the logo, Tom Freston was the President and CEO of the network, the influence of Bob Pittman was still around, and it offered up value and creativity to viewers.  Unfortunately it seems those days have passed.

Because of this campaign to promote reading I was introduced to the works of Franz Kafka and more importantly the works of Donald Barthelme.  To me, Donald Barthelme is the master of the short story.  I read almost every single day.  I will admit that there are days when I am on vacation that I might miss the opportunity to read in exchange for the opportunity to explore a new city.

Many years ago, Jim Rohn (author and personal development trainer) said, “If you read one book every month about your industry, in 10 years you’ll have read 120 books. That will put you in the top one percent of your field.”  Mr. Rohn was 100% correct and he was just talking about the lazy way to do it.  I once heard someone say, “Skip a meal, but never skip the opportunity to read.”  If you just invest 20 – 30 minutes a day in yourself, to read, there isn’t any reason that can’t read at least one book a week.  If you were to read one book a week that would mean at the end of year you would have read 52 books.  At this rate you would be in the top one percent in two years instead of 10.

For myself, I find that reading in a 80/20 ratio works best for me.  Eighty percent of the books that I read are for knowledge and learning.  Twenty percent of the books that I read are for humor, pleasure, and escapism.  I would personally get bored if all I did was read for learning.  I also need to be entertained when I read.

Please don’t tell me you don’t have enough time to read.  If you really don’t think that you have the time to read…then I suggest that you at least make the time to read, “The 168 Hour Week” by, Dr. Kevin Hogan.

You can find the time to read.  You just have to do it.  I truly believe that reading is a great exercise that you can and should do for your brain everyday to keep it healthy and active.  Think of your brain as muscle…exercise it and make it grow.  The dividends that it will pay you can be huge.

If you’re looking for a new author to read or you want to start reading a new genere of books, then I suggest you take a look at the works of Thorne Smith.  You can find out more about Thorne Smith at the blog and and website created by, Michael Walker at   http://www.thornesmithblog.com/

Grab a book and start reading today.  Remember, “Books Feed Your Head”.

Laugh More

I remember reading some years ago that children laugh somewhere around 300 – 400 times a day.  In the same article it said that adults laugh as little as 15 times a day.  Wow, that is a huge difference.  To me it is sad statement that as we grow older we “lose” (or maybe we stifle) our ability to laugh.  Me, I love to laugh.  I don’t think that I am quite up to 300 laughs a day…but I get in about 100 a day.  I believe that laughter is beneficial and extremely healing.  I believe that it can be very therapeutic…not only for yourself, but those around you.

Dr. Richard Schulze said in an interview once that he encouraged his patients to learn 1,000 jokes as part of their healing process.  While you might think this to be a tedious and unneccesary task to learn so many jokes, why not instead think of the laughter his patients got from taking on the assignment.  While learning 1,000 jokes do you think their minds were focused on their illness or on laughter?  I’m guessing that they were focused on laughing.

In his groundbreaking book, “Anatomy Of An Illness”, Norman Cousins describes how he started watching “The 3 Stooges” on a daily basis to “activate” his sense of humor and “regain” his laugh.

There is power in laughter.  I encourage you to laugh more every day.  I encourage you to make those around you laugh whenever you can.

Yours In Health!

What is Natural Cycle IVF?

Conventional IVF Today’s conventional IVF is ‘stimulated’ – drugs are used to prompt the woman’s ovaries to produce several eggs, rather than just one. Huge rise in dengue fever cases in Thailand

There has been a rise in the numbers of dengue fever infections in Thailand, particularly in the southern & north-eastern regions. Whilst the most vulnerable group remains children under 15, tourists to Asia can, & do, contract this nasty virus, spread by daytime-biting mosquitoes.

To reduce your chances of becoming a dengue fever victim, consider covering up towards the late afternoon, when the mosquitoes bite, and apply a good insect repellent to exposed areas of skin.

As the rainy season approaches, the numbers of mosquitoes (and people catching dengue) will rise.

There is no vaccine against dengue.

All Physical Education is Not Created Equal

SPARK's Paul Rosengard (and friend)

SPARK’s Paul Rosengard (and friend)

With the growing epidemic of obesity in the United States, a great deal of focus has been put on schools as the “heart of health” — the best location to address behaviors leading to childhood obesity.  Schools are tasked with creating an environment where making the healthy choice is the easy choice,  Even with this goal in mind, with limited resources, many schools are faced with reducing the number of physical education hours available to students.

With limited access to PE, it’s important to make all physical activity in K-12 classes count.

In a recent blog post, the Thriving Schools team interviewed Paul Rosengard, author, researcher/educator, and executive director of SPARK programs of San Diego State University. According to its website, SPARK is a research-based, public health organization dedicated to improving the health of children, adolescents, and adults by disseminating evidence-based Physical Education, After School, Early Childhood, and Coordinated School Health programs to teachers and recreation leaders serving Pre-K through 12th grade students.

The blog post is the first in a three-part discussion on what makes quality PE.  Rosengard touches on the variances in PE requirements from state to state, as well as how to measure the quality of a PE program (hint: frequency and duration are only part of the story).

Read the first in a series of three posts highlighting this interview with Rosengard on the Thriving Schools website and news blog.

The Center for Total Health has a new, interactive, touch-screen exhibit focused on healthy schools and healthy workplaces, and much of its content addresses the growing challenge of obesity in the United States.  If you are in the Washington, D.C. area, we invite you to stop by and experience it — and the rest of the center’s exhibits — first hand.  You can find information about visiting the center here.

Baltimore Laser Eye Surgeon Discusses the Future of Advanced Cataract Surgery

Cataract Surgeon in Baltimore Discusses the Future of Advanced Procedures

Baltimore, MD — According to the latest statistics from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), cataracts affect nearly 22 million Americans age 40 and older. However, Dr. Jay C. Grochmal, a LASIK and cataract surgeon in Baltimore, says with the recent advancements in cataract surgery, patients do not have to let blurring vision hinder their daily life. Dr. Grochmal discusses the latest innovations in refractive-cataract surgery and how they can benefit patients looking to improve their vision.

At his Baltimore cataract surgery practice, Dr. Grochmal says the aging baby boomer population has brought an influx of patients needing vision correction for cataracts and other age-related conditions. Cataracts develop as people get older and are exhibited in a clouding and opaqueness of the natural lens inside one’s eye, causing vision to blur. The AAO report also shows that by age 80, more than half of all Americans will have visually significant cataracts. Dr. Grochmal says while cataracts can be a bothersome medical issue, the good news is that advancements in ophthalmology and surgical techniques have made clear vision an affordable and effective option through cataract surgery.

With procedures such as laser refractive cataract surgery on the horizon, Dr. Grochmal says treatment is now ultimately safer than ever before and more successful in helping patients achieve improved vision with less dependence on glasses. He says other innovations have helped create smaller incisions for lens extraction and replacement during cataract surgery, and through technology such as the Zeiss IOL Master, doctors can better measure the power of the intraocular lenses and offer more accurate visual results. “With the safety of cataract surgery improving, patients no longer have to wait for their vision to drastically deteriorate before undergoing cataract surgery. Also, the quality of newer IOL’s are allowing excellent vision after surgery,” says Dr. Grochmal.

Thanks to a diverse arsenal of lenses such as toric and multifocal IOL’s, Dr. Grochmal says patients can now enjoy the benefits of custom treatment for their individual eye condition and lifestyle needs. Whether patients wish to enhance their vision up close or far away or find a balance of clarity in both distance and near vision, he says there is a solution for every patient’s desires. Dr. Grochmal says cataract surgery recovery is now also much quicker and requires less trauma to the function of one’s eye. “With such small incisions now possible and the availability of toric IOL’s, post operative astigmatism can be minimized if not completely corrected,” he says.

Regardless of whether patients are looking for cataract surgery or another vision correction procedure such as LASIK in Baltimore, Dr. Grochmal says the advancements in ophthalmology are making significant strides towards helping people attain perfect, lasting eyesight. He adds that he is excited to see the further development of patient comfort and care and hopes patients continue to take advantage of the benefits that procedures like cataract surgery can offer.

About Jay C. Grochmal, MD

Dr. Jay C. Grochmal received his medical degree from the University of Maryland, after which he completed a rotating internship at the U.S. Public Health Hospital in Baltimore. He also completed a residency in the Department of Ophthalmology at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center, where he was Chief Resident. A member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Dr. Grochmal has participated in several medical mission trips to offer his experience and skills in vision correction to patients in Pakistan, Jamaica, and the Bahamas. He is currently on staff with the Greater Baltimore Medical Center and St. Agnes Hospital. He is the medical director at the Snowden River Surgery Center.

Located at 405 Frederick Rd, Suite 102 in Baltimore, MD, Dr. Grochmal’s practice can be reached at (410) 697-4090. He can also be contacted online via the website grochmaleye.com or facebook.com/grochmaleye.

Major outbreak of Typhoid in Malawi

There have been 30,000 confirmed cases of typhoid fever each month so far this year at Malawi’s central hospital. This disease is spread by food or water contaminated with typhoid organisms (often as a result of inadequate handwashing by the cook or consumer).

Travellers should take care to with hand hygiene and source food or drink from clean and reputable establishments. Drink only water that is pure, and use it to clean the teeth as well.
There is a worldwide shortage of typhoid vaccine at present, and those travelling to areas where clean water is unobtainable should do their best to obtain the vaccine before travel.

Top 3 Ways to Reduce Your Risk for Age-Related Macular Degeneration

As the leading cause of loss of vision in older adults, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is not completely preventable. In some cases it may be in our genes, and others it may simply have to do with whether our eyes are light or dark. These factors can make it an unavoidable, but treatable, condition.

However, recent studies have shown that AMD may be linked to a variety of other risk factors. Contributors may include the amount of antioxidants in the body, heart disease, high blood pressure, smoking, and weight. These possible factors are far more manageable than your genes or eye color, meaning you may be able to reduce your risk for developing AMD with a few simple steps.

Top 3 Ways to Reduce Your Risk for AMD

  1. Eat more polysaturated fat. An Australian study observed that people who consumed fish regularly (i.e. more than once a week) may have halved their risk of getting AMD, compared to those who ate fish less than once a month. Fish contains omega-3 fatty acids, another part of your diet you can increase to help reduce your risk for AMD.
  2. Reduce heart disease risk factors. Many of the things that contribute to the development of heart disease may increase your risk for AMD. Such factors may include weight, exercise, diet, and more. To better preserve your eyesight, it is recommended that you cut these risk factors out of your life and live a healthier life in the process.
  3. Limit yourself. Smoking and drinking have been linked to the development of AMD in several studies, so limiting or eliminating their use altogether may help you lower your risk. Cholesterol levels may also correlate with your risk of AMD development, so avoiding too many cholesterol-rich foods is also a good idea. The best part — all of these steps are not only good for your eye health, but your general health as well.

Understanding LASIK | Your Top 5 Questions Answered

At first glance, LASIK can seem like a confusing or complicated subject.  As a result, many patients don’t explore their LASIK options, for fear of being misinformed or not understanding the procedure completely.  Because we want all our patients to find out what laser vision correction can do for them, we thought we would take a moment to “de-mystify” LASIK and answer some of the most common questions we’re hearing.  It’s time to set the record straight!

Here is our list of the Top 5 Patient Questions About LASIK:

  1. What is LASIK in a nutshell? The goal of a LASIK procedure is simple: to improve vision and reduce a patient’s dependence on corrective lenses.  The procedure uses special light energy to reshape the cornea, effectively combating the affects of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
  2. Are all LASIK procedures the same? There are several types of LASIK procedures available today – each with their own unique benefits.  Our practice is proud to offer what many are considering the gold standard in modern laser vision correction:  iLASIK™.  Using 3D eye mapping to create a fully-customized treatment plan, iLASIK is completely bladeless and relies on cutting-edge “cool laser” technology to safely reshape the cornea.
  3. Is LASIK painful? While tolerance can sometimes vary, LASIK is generally regarded as a “relatively painless” procedure.  Very often, the only sensation patients report is a slight pressure.  Furthermore, we work to ensure patient comfort by administering numbing eye drops before the procedure.
  4. Are most patients happy with their results? While each patient is different and can expect unique results, LASIK tends to be a highly successful procedure.  In fact, “LASIK vision correction has the highest patient satisfaction rate of any elective surgery,” reports The Eye Surgery Education Council, “95.4%, according to a 10-year survey of scientific studies from around the world.”
  5. How can I find out if LASIK is right for me? In general, LASIK patients tend to be in good health, free of eye conditions such as cataracts, over the age of 21.  But, since there are other factors to consider in determining a good candidate for LASIK, we encourage anyone interested to schedule a consultation and find out what laser vision correction can do for them.

Who Made the U.S. News Annual Top Hospitals Rankings?

Today, U.S. News & World Report came out with their annual list of the nation’s top hospitals.  Facilities ranking near the top of a minimum of six out of 16 specialties (e.g., cancer, neurosurgery) make the 2013-2014 honor roll, and after evaluating almost 5,000 medical centers, 18 made that cut.  This year, Johns Hopkins was named number one overall, followed by Mass General in the number two spot.

In addition to the overall rankings, the report also rates medical centers in most states and in major metropolitan regions (all U.S. regions with at least 500,000 in population).  Several Kaiser Permanente facilities in California and Hawaii were recognized in these rankings, as called out in this press release.

According to its website, U.S. News primarily uses objective data on hospital performance, such as patient survival rates, and structural resources, such as nurse staffing levels as a basis for rankings. Each hospital’s reputation, as determined by a survey of physician specialists, is also a factor determining each hospital’s rankings.  An FAQ on the ins and outs of the ranking process can be found here.

For patients under 18 and their caregivers, U.S. News published a separate Best Children’s Hospitals Honor Roll and rankings in 10 pediatric specialties last month.

According to Living Magazine’s data from issues mailed, its Northeast Tarrant County audience extends to Southlake, Grapevine, Colleyville, Westlake, Trophy Club, North Richland Hills, Roanoke, Rockwall and Rowlett. The magazine states that approximately 80,000 issues are mailed to this area each month.

“I first want to thank the readers of Living Magazine for this honor. I cherish any recognition that singles me out, but it’s also a compliment to my amazing staff,” Dr. Labor said. “The honor is made even more special by the fact that readers are more likely patients – either those I’ve treated or who voted for me on reputation.”

This isn’t the first time Dr. Labor has been recognized in local publications. He has been voted a Top Doc in Fort Worth and Tarrant County by Fort Worth, Texas magazine, and voted “#1 Favorite Ophthalmologist” in 2010 and 2011 in a Star Community Newspapers Readers‘ Choice Awards survey. He has also been voted a top Ophthalmologist by the Consumers’ Research Council of America, which conducts unbiased research of professional services offered across the U.S.

Encephalitis in India

Seasonal encephalitis has led to 38 deaths so far from this in 2013 – this number will rise as the monsoon weather approaches and there are more mosquitoes. Although not all cases are caused by Japanese encephalitis, travellers can be vaccinated against this strain of encephailitis, which is a most serious disease. Japanese encephalitis is endemic in all countries of the southern and south-east Asia. Travellers should also make sure they sleep under nets, and ‘cover up’ when outside in the hours of dusk & darkness. A good insect repellent should be used on exposed areas of shin.
