High Blood Pressure – Several studies have found links between heart disease and narrowing of the small blood vessels in the retina, according to a paper published in the American Journal of Medicine. This can be especially true for people with traditional heart disease risk factors.

Diabetes – A small amount of bleeding in the retina can be one of the first clues a patient might have type 2 diabetes. This is a symptom of diabetic retinopathy. By detecting this early, managing diet and weight can cut the risk of blindness in half and help prevent further damage.

Rheumatoid Arthritis – Rheumatoid arthritis affects small joints in the hands and feet. About 25% of these patients have eye issues, the most common being dry eye. People with rheumatoid arthritis have high levels of inflammatory chemicals in their blood, which can sometimes migrate to the eyeball.

Multiple Sclerosis – The inflammation of the optic nerve is called “optic neuritis.” In the article, Michael Munson, president of the American Optometric Association, says this doesn’t automatically mean a patient has MS but can be a sign of the disease.

Cancer – Specific eye issues can reveal various types of cancers, one of the most important diseases to detect early. Certain types of bleeding in the retina, and changes in a patient’s field of vision are two examples.

Our Fort Worth and Dallas LASIK patients come from varied backgrounds. They have different careers, and their own individual interests. But each patient’s eyes are even more unique. Each of your eyes are uniquely complex and each patient’s needs can vary. In many ways this is why LASIK surgery recovery times can vary too. On average, most people see a significant improvement in their vision within the first 2 to 7 days. Generally, it can take between 3 to 6 months for vision to fully stabilize. But while each patient’s eyes are unique, there are post-surgery basics all patients should keep in mind that can help their recovery, for example:

Your eyes need time to heal. While the LASIK procedure is usually simple, quick, and painless, it is still surgery and each eye needs to heal and adjust.

Avoid rubbing your eyes. Discomfort, sensitivity to light, blurry or hazy vision and watery eyes are common right after surgery. These naturally make you want to rub your eyes, but this will gradually improve in the first few days. Plus, your doctor will likely prescribe a mild pain reliever to help.

Keep follow up appointments. These generally start at 24 to 48 hours after surgery and extend to regular appointments over a few months. During follow up, vision is tested and evaluated at various intervals. Typically, patients are told to avoid the following: non-contact sports 1 to 3 days after surgery; lotions, creams or make up around the eye for up to 2 weeks; strenuous contact sports for at least 4 weeks; and swimming or hot tubs for 1 to 2 months.

What else? LASIK continues to improve in safety and effectiveness, and post-surgery complications are rare when compared to patients without them. If considering LASIK, you should be thoroughly evaluated to make sure you’re a LASIK candidate. If not, ask your doctor about other effective alternatives. What’s more, your doctor should always be up front with you, look after your total health, and do everything possible to ensure optimum results and ease of recovery.

Recovery may vary depending on severity of eye condition, patient health, and other factors for patients found to be LASIK candidates. Always seek the advice of a board-certified eye doctor for information related to your particular condition.

When is the last time that you took off your shoes and yours socks and you walked barefoot on the grass.  If you’re older than twelve I’m guessing it has been quite some time.  It’s funny, when we’re kids, if we see a mud puddle we JUMP right in it.  When we become adults we walk around the mud puddle.  Not only do we walk around the mud puddle…we complain about it! 

Stop complaining.  It’s not really serving you.  Start living.  Get outside and re-connect with our planet.  This isn’t some hippy dippy statement.  We (human beings) are electrical beings.  That’s right, we are electrical beings.  Electricity is constantly flowing through our bodies.   In fact, without electricity you wouldn’t be reading this post right now.  Without electricity running through your body your brain would cease to function. 

Sometimes we need to re-charge.  We need to “ground” ourselves.  One of the ways to do this is by getting outside and walking barefoot on the grass.  While you’re walking (barefoot of course) do some deep breathing – you’ll be accomplishing two things at the same time (there is nothing like multi-tasking when it comes to your health).  Walking barefoot on the grass will “ground” you, literally.  Doing this will help you release built up electrical energy that’s in your body.

As stated above, your entire nervous system is run on electrical energy.  Get walking, ground yourself, do your deep breathing, and make some positive changes in your life.  This doesn’t cost you a dime.  What have you got to lose?

Long-term sun exposure can be harmful to the eyes as well, increasing the risk for conditions like cataracts, macular degeneration, and even eyelid cancers.  So what are some of the ways you can keep your eyes safe this summer?  Keep reading to find out!

How You Can Protect Your Eyes From the Sun

  • Choose the right pair of sunglasses. Sunglasses are not just a fashion accessory, but rather an important tool in protecting your eyes from the sun. Select a pair of sunglasses that offers 100% UV protection, as they will be the only glasses that can effectively block both UV-A and UV-B rays.
  • Wear a hat. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat can offer your eyes additional protection from the sun’s rays.

Every year, just after Thanksgiving to just before Valentine’s Day we are constantly bombarded with the above mentioned headlines. Every year we see news reports about shortages of the flu vaccine and we are told that this will be the worst year yet for people being susceptible to Influenza.

Let’s take a moment to logically examine how these headlines are repeated year after year.  What happens at the end of November?  Thanksgiving.  What do we do at Thanksgiving?  Well, if you’re like most people you have two (maybe even three) Thanksgiving dinners that you have to celebrate.  Usually you and your spouse go spend time with your family. Then the next day you spend a few hours driving across the state to go celebrate Thanksgiving with your spouses family. Sometimes you spend an extra Thanksgiving with close friends.  We all know what happens at Thanksgiving…we eat, eat, eat…loosen a notch on our belts, take a breather and go back to the kitchen to eat more.  Then we sit down to have an adult beverage or two (or three) while we watch sports with friends and loved ones.

After Thanksgiving we are still gorging on leftovers for two to three days.  Then the Christmas parties start.  Cookies, cakes, rum balls, sugar, sugar, and more sugar.  Plus, the two (or three) adult beverages just to be sociable.

Finally Christmas arrives.  This includes more food, more desserts, and more drinks. Usually you have two Christmases to attend (just like Thanksgiving).  At Christmas it seems that you encounter the cousin (and his wife) that you can’t stand (by the way, they don’t care too much for you either).  Then Grandma thinks that Uncle Joe is being hard on Billy. Uncle Joe wants Billy to be more like his sister Julie.  The stress builds up and to deal with the stress you eat more (because sometimes you’re an emotional eater) and you drink a little bit more (hey, it helps calm your nerves).

To reward yourself you decide to have a New Years Eve blowout extravaganza.  More food, more snacks, and A LOT more drinks.  You’ve already scheduled yourself off for January 2nd as January 1st happened during the middle of the week and you know that you’re going to be a little too exhausted to make it into work.  January 2nd you get yourself going with a couple of Bloody Mary’s (a little ‘hair of the dog’ never hurt anyone).  You start looking over your New Years Resolutions and you’re ready to conquer the world on January 3rd.  You’re on track with your resolutions for one week and then BOOM!!!  You’ve got The Flu!!!

You curse the flu.  How could this happen to me?  Why did this happen to me?!?  You’re sick, tired, and mad.  Darn you flu!

Whoa, wait a minute.  It’s not the flu’s fault.  It’s your fault.  Look at what you did to your body for the last 6 weeks. You’ve abused it.  You ate too much sugar, drank too much alcohol, been stressed out of your mind and then you ate even more.  It’s been shown that sugar, alcohol, and stress all lower the defenses of your immune system and make your body more susceptible to illness.

Your “inner terrain” was compromised.  Germs, “bugs”, and viruses are around us everyday.  It’s when our bodies become toxic and polluted from the overload of cookies, cakes, beer, wine, and mixed drinks that our immune system can’t work at optimal potential.

Let me be clear, I’m not telling you to not get a flu shot.  I am suggesting that you examine your dietary choices and how you handle stress.  I do believe that you can offer your body supplements that can help support your immune system.  One of those products is A.D.P.

In order to prevent your eyes from becoming dry, keep your eyes lubricated by using artificial tears. This will keep the eyes healthy, comfortable, and most importantly, moisturized. Patients may also find it helpful to use a humidifier to prevent dryness in a room.
  2. Wear sunglasses with Ultraviolet (UV) protection. Most people think that UV rays only pose a danger to the eyes during the summer. In reality, snowy conditions can double the impact of the sun’s rays! During the winter, UV rays enter your eyes from above and reflect off the snow on the ground. Because of this, it is extremely important that patients wear sunglasses that can provide the right level of protection. If you need a pair of prescription sunglasses with UV protection, schedule a routine eye exam. During an extremely bright day, it is also a good idea to wear a visor or hat if you will be outside for a long period of time. For an outdoor sport, like skiing, wear goggles to protect your eyes.
  3. Make sure your children’s eyes are protected. As most parents know, children do not always want to wear protective goggles or sunglasses when they are playing outside during the winter. However, protecting a young child’s eyes is essential in preventing conditions such as photokeratitis (”snow blindness.”) Snow blindness is an often painful condition that occurs when eyes have been overexposed to UV rays. Parents should also remember to replace their child’s goggles and sunglasses every few years, in order to ensure the child’s eyes are sufficiently protected.
