Baltimore Eye Surgeon Now Performing Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery

lasik, eye surgery, baltimore md, eyelid surgery, eye surgeon

Baltimore, MD – According to the Administration on Aging (AOA), persons 65 and older represented nearly 13% of the U.S. population in 2009, and are expected to represent 19% by 2030. The Bureau of Labor Statistics finds that the number of older Americans in the workforce is growing as well. As the population and workforce ages, Baltimore eye surgeon Jay C. Grochmal, MD says his patients that are late stage baby-boomers are under extreme pressure to maintain a high level of performance in the workplace, and portraying a vivacious and youthful appearance is essential to continued success.

While helping patients improve their vision with procedures such as LASIK and cataract surgery is important to success in the workplace, Dr. Grochmal says the desire to help his patients enhance their aesthetic appearance has become an important part of his practice as well. He says this growing demand for increased confidence and a natural-looking enhancement is what led him to the decision to add cosmetic eyelid surgery to his list of procedures: “Our society places such a high value on appearance and equates a youthful look with the likelihood of business and social success. Baby boomers are still very active and productive and a refreshed look can eliminate unwarranted bias in career choices.”

As the number of cosmetic procedures performed in the U.S. continues to increase, Dr. Grochmal says the desire to look younger longer is obvious, adding that a tough economy and high unemployment rate further contribute to the stress his older patients must endure. Because he constantly strives to improve patient care while providing the latest and safest procedures, Dr. Grochmal says providing cosmetic treatments for his patients is a result of his original commitment to provide the most effective treatments available to meet any and all needs of his patients: “As the cliche goes now, 50 is the new 40 and 60 is the new 50, and so on. My patients want to look as young as they feel and be able to see well too. Ultimately, we believe providing cosmetic eyelid surgery will improve their chances of success in the workplace.”

About Jay C. Grochmal, MD

After earning his medical degree from the University of Maryland, Dr. Jay C. Grochmal completed his residency while achieving the rank of Chief Resident at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center’s Department of Ophthalmology. In addition to being on staff at some of the leading hospitals in the Baltimore area, Dr. Grochmal has traveled on a number of missions dedicated to improving eye care around the world.

Grochmal Eye Center is located in the Catonsville Professional Center at 405 Frederick Rd., Ste. 102, Baltimore, MD 21228, and can be reached at (410) 697-4090. Dr. Grochmal and his team can also be reached at grochmaleye.com or their Baltimore Eye Care Facebook page.

Transportation Techies Meet at CTH

Capital Bikeshare at the CTH

Obligatory Walking Wall Shot – Capital Bikeshare

Thanks to all who attended the Transportation Techies Meet Up at the Center for Total Health tonight, and special thanks to organizers Michael Schade and Tom Fairchild. Michael started this Meet Up just four months ago to meet other (self-described) “data nerds” who love transportation.

Presentations ranged from uber-technical to practical to futuristic, but all looked to data to improve transportation. Learning where people walk, bike, and ride (metro or bus) can help planners, architects, and residents make informed decisions.

If you’re interested, check out their meet up calendar – there’s lots going on in the coming months!

Special thanks to Kaiser Permanente’s Community Benefit and Innovation & Advanced Technology teams, who made tonight possible.

Going to the 20th FIFA World Cup in June 2014? – Read this…

Advice from the Globe Travel Health Centre for football fans travelling to Brazil for the World Cup:
We hope you have a wonderful time, but do be aware that you will require certain vaccinations before you go – and if you are going to be travelling to Manaus, then you will need more than just the basics travel vaccinations.

All travellers to Brazil should be up to date with hepatitis A, typhoid and tetanus. Some of these may be available from your GP free of charge, but many surgeries no longer provide this service.
If you will be seeing the matches that are planned to take place in Manaus, then you will also need a yellow fever vaccination and anti-malarial medication, as Manaus, despite being a city of almost 2 million people, is in the centre of the Brazilian jungle.

If you are going to combine your football trip with some sightseeing to other areas of Brazil, you may wish to consider some other vaccinations such as hepatitis B or rabies.

You will also need advice on how to avoid other diseases such as dengue fever – this is spread by daytime-biting mosquitoes that live in urban (city) settings, the most likely place to find a football stadium

Not forgetting travellers’ diarrhoea – common, but can be avoided…

Laugh More

I remember reading some years ago that children laugh somewhere around 300 – 400 times a day.  In the same article it said that adults laugh as little as 15 times a day.  Wow, that is a huge difference.  To me it is sad statement that as we grow older we “lose” (or maybe we stifle) our ability to laugh.  Me, I love to laugh.  I don’t think that I am quite up to 300 laughs a day…but I get in about 100 a day.  I believe that laughter is beneficial and extremely healing.  I believe that it can be very therapeutic…not only for yourself, but those around you.

Dr. Richard Schulze said in an interview once that he encouraged his patients to learn 1,000 jokes as part of their healing process.  While you might think this to be a tedious and unneccesary task to learn so many jokes, why not instead think of the laughter his patients got from taking on the assignment.  While learning 1,000 jokes do you think their minds were focused on their illness or on laughter?  I’m guessing that they were focused on laughing.

In his groundbreaking book, “Anatomy Of An Illness”, Norman Cousins describes how he started watching “The 3 Stooges” on a daily basis to “activate” his sense of humor and “regain” his laugh.

There is power in laughter.  I encourage you to laugh more every day.  I encourage you to make those around you laugh whenever you can.

Yours In Health!

Are You Turned On?

Are you turned on?…electrically speaking, that is…and I’m not refering to Timothy Leary’s, “Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out.”

The other day we talked about how we are electrical beings and that from time to time we need to “ground” ourselves and release some of the static electricity that is built up in our bodies.  I had a couple of people tell me that this is done all the time throughout most of Europe.  I also had a few people who wanted to see learn more about how our bodies operate on an electrical current.

If you’re one of our readers who would like a visual of the body producing electricity in action then this video is for you.

What you are viewing is a group of  four people holding hands and two of the people are holding “hands” with a Ring Around The Rosie Doll.  On each of the dolls hands is a small metal button.  When both of these buttons are touched with bare skin the doll begins to sing.  You will notice in the video that there are a couple of times that the participants let go of the hand of one of their partners…once they do this the doll stops singing.  Once they hold hands again the doll starts to sing.  The doll sings because of the electricity being produced by each participant.

Remember, you are an electrical being…do something good for yourself to recharge your batteries…a nice walk around the block in the evening air is always a simple (and free) thing that you can do to bring in more good energy and release the bad.

Yours In Health!

Enhance Your Eyelashes with Latisse™ Today

The first and only eyelash treatment approved by the FDA, Latisse™ can help you grow full and natural-looking lashes while simultaneously treating you for hypotrichosis, a condition that prevents hair growth. Latisse is a great way to reverse the effects of this condition and enhance the look of your eyes, requiring only a simple application each night. After a few weeks, your lashes will be fuller, longer, and thicker than you’ve ever seen them. Ready to learn more about what Latisse can do for you?

5 Need-to-Know Latisse™ Facts

  1. Latisse contains an active ingredient known as bimatoprost, which was first used in glaucoma medication and is believed to promote hair growth.
  2. The medication does not work as mascara; in fact, you should remove any make-up or contacts before applying it to the base of your eyelashes each day. You should never use the same applicator for both eyes, and never re-use an applicator for even one more night, as this could result in an allergic reaction or eye infection.
  3. Results will start to become visible after 4 weeks, with full results manifesting by 16 weeks. Lashes will gradually grow darker, longer, and thicker.
  4. Side effects are rare, but may include itching, redness, or dryness in the eye area. Other potential side effects include eyelid darkening or brown pigmentation of the iris, both of which are very rare occurrences.
  5. Through a series of studies, the FDA has deemed Latisse as safe for most people. However, patients with pre-existing eye problems and women who are pregnant or nursing should avoid this treatment. Patients who are taking any kind of intraocular pressure lowering medications should consult their eye doctor before taking Latisse, so that he or she can closely monitor the patient’s eye pressure.

Mexico & the Caribbean

Going to Mexico or the Caribbean? There has been a surge in cases of Chikungunya disease in some parts of Mexico (particularly on the Yucatan peninsula including Cancun) & the Caribbean (including Guadeloupe, St Martin, Martinique, British Virgin islands, Anguilla, & Dominica).

This rather nasty virus is spread by mosquitoes, and can in some cases be fatal, and there is no vaccine available.

Travellers holidaying in Cancun or the affected parts of the Caribbean should take care to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes, and if they experience a high fever (high temperature) should seek medical help immediately.

Rabies in northern Greece

Having been rabies free since 1988, (last animal case 1987, last human case 1970), rabies has re-emerged in wild & domestic animals in northern Greece during the last year. There have been reports of rabies virus in neighbouring countries.

Travellers should avoid contact with animals, particularly stray dogs, and should consider vaccination against rabies if planning to walk or camp in remote areas, particularly near national borders with other countries.

Grochmal Eye Center in the News with New Technology

LASIK, eye, surgery, surgeon, vision, correction, cirrus, baltimore, maryland, MD

Grochmal Eye Center Adds Hi-Def Cirrus Laser Eye Surgery Technology

The Grochmal Eye Center is a Baltimore LASIK surgery practice, offering complete and comprehensive eyecare for the entire family. Dr. Jay C. Grochmal is announcing the addition of the Cirrus™ HD-OCT by Zeiss, which he says helps him visualize and analyze the status and health of the retina. In particular, the Cirrus™ technology allows him to assess the health of his patients’ eyes prior to performing a number of procedures, including traditional cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange.

The Grochmal Eye Center was founded in 1978, and continues to provide state-of-the-art eye care and laser eye surgery procedures, such as PRK and LASIK in Maryland under the leadership of Dr. Jay C. Grochmal. As part of their commitment to the cutting-edge of ophthalmic technology, Dr. Grochmal is announcing the latest addition to the practice: the Cirrus™ HD-OCT by Zeiss. He says the new technology will help him and his staff diagnose any changes in the macula caused by different diseases, such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or glaucoma. He adds that early detection of these diseases will enable him to start treatment before permanent vision loss occurs.

Zeiss is one of the world’s leading medical technology companies. Founder Carl Zeiss was the first to commercialize the OCT technology, and the first to deliver the high definition 3D maps created by the Cirrus™ HD-OCT. Dr. Grochmal says the new technology not only helps him detect potentially damaging eye conditions, but also helps him improve the overall level of care he can offer his patients. The printouts from the OCT are very helpful, according to Dr. Grochmal, as they aid in educating his patients and help them gain a better understanding of the disease and procedure.

Whether he is performing refractive or cataract surgery, LASIK or PRK, Dr. Grochmal says he and his team tirelessly pursue the latest advancements in eye care and laser eye surgery to ensure their patients receive the best care available. “The advancements in ophthalmology in just the last ten years are astounding; staying on top of these developments is essential to our continued dedication to providing state-of-the art treatment. Our patients deserve only the best, and that is what we constantly strive to offer.”

About Dr. Grochmal

Dr. Jay Grochmal earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland. He then completed a rotating internship with the U. S. Public Health Hospital in Baltimore, MD. After becoming the Chief Resident at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center’s Department of Ophthalmology, he completed his residency and established the Grochmal Eye Center. Dr. Grochmal is currently on staff at some of the top hospitals in Baltimore, and continues to offer his expertise and skill to medical missionary trips around the globe.

Focusing on Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry Eye Syndrome, also commonly referred to as “dry eyes” or “dry eye”, can happen for a variety of reasons. For years, Eye Consultants of Texas has been treating dry eye patients across Dallas/Fort Worth, and we are continuing to expand treatment options to relieve our patients of the discomfort dry eyes can cause.

Dry eyes happens when your eyes don’t produce enough tears to keep them properly lubricated. Symptoms can vary from stinging, burning, redness, or itching, to eye pain, sensitivity to light, a “gritty” feeling, increased eye irritation or eye fatigue. Tear production weakens as we age, which is why dry eyes has found to be more common in people over age 50 – even more so in those over 65 – with a higher number of women suffers than men. Causes can include certain blood pressure, anti-depressant, acne and other prescription medications; post-menopause, eyelid disorders, and other health issues.

Dry eyes has been a recognized condition for many years. However, it was only until relatively recently that research showed a need for more focus. In 2007, the International Dry Eye Workshop (DEWS) report, widely considered the most important research to date, suggested that chronic dry eyes was perhaps more common than thought. The report estimated that nearly 5 million Americans 50 years of age or older suffered from dry eyes, and “tens of millions more have less severe symptoms.”

“We live in a world that is ripe for so many dry eye causes,” said Eye Consultants of Texas founder, Phillips Kirk Labor, MD. “We’re spending a lot of time in front of the computer. We’re taking more medications, our air quality isn’t what it used to be, and we have a larger aging population. These and other facts of life may contribute to an increase in patients experiencing dry eye symptoms. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that, in the majority of cases, it is easily treatable.”

Dry eyes is one of many specialties we offer at our offices in Grapevine, and we are adopting the most advanced diagnostic tools and treatments for our dry eye patients. If you suspect you may have dry eyes, we have specialists that can help. Call us at 877-516-4364 to set up an appointment or learn more. We’re located in Grapevine, convenient to the entire Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex.

Look for subsequent blogs about dry eyes coming soon.

Eating your way to help reduce the risk of cataracts

From an early age, we’re told that carrots are good for our eyes. It’s no surprise that research has suggested a connection between nutrition and prevention of cataracts. Not only do we encourage a healthy diet for our Dallas/Fort Worth eye care patients, we may make nutritional recommendations as part of a patient’s treatment plan.

According to an allaboutvision article, several studies have been conducted revealing that diet may help reduce cataract risk. Below are highlights from the article:

• Carbohydrates: Researchers in Australia found that high carbohydrate diets may increase cataract risk. Published in Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, 2010.

• Vitamins & Minerals: A large study of adult women found that eating foods rich in vitamins and minerals may help delay cataract development (published in the Archives of Ophthalmology, 2010). Another study suggests that lutein, zeaxanthin and vitamin E from food and supplements “were associated with significantly decreased risk of cataract.” Lutein and zeaxanthin are found in green leafy vegetables and other foods, such as eggs.

• Antioxidants: A 10-year study of 2,400 older adults, also conducted in Australia, found that a combined intake of multiple antioxidants reduced the risk of cataracts. Published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2008.

Today, most doctors and experts agree, nutrition that benefits health including eye care, should come from a healthy diet. While supplements can help balance a diet lacking in nutrients, which is common for most Americans, consult with your doctor first to help you choose what’s right for you.

Top 3 Ways to Reduce Your Risk for Age-Related Macular Degeneration

As the leading cause of loss of vision in older adults, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is not completely preventable. In some cases it may be in our genes, and others it may simply have to do with whether our eyes are light or dark. These factors can make it an unavoidable, but treatable, condition.

However, recent studies have shown that AMD may be linked to a variety of other risk factors. Contributors may include the amount of antioxidants in the body, heart disease, high blood pressure, smoking, and weight. These possible factors are far more manageable than your genes or eye color, meaning you may be able to reduce your risk for developing AMD with a few simple steps.

Top 3 Ways to Reduce Your Risk for AMD

  1. Eat more polysaturated fat. An Australian study observed that people who consumed fish regularly (i.e. more than once a week) may have halved their risk of getting AMD, compared to those who ate fish less than once a month. Fish contains omega-3 fatty acids, another part of your diet you can increase to help reduce your risk for AMD.
  2. Reduce heart disease risk factors. Many of the things that contribute to the development of heart disease may increase your risk for AMD. Such factors may include weight, exercise, diet, and more. To better preserve your eyesight, it is recommended that you cut these risk factors out of your life and live a healthier life in the process.
  3. Limit yourself. Smoking and drinking have been linked to the development of AMD in several studies, so limiting or eliminating their use altogether may help you lower your risk. Cholesterol levels may also correlate with your risk of AMD development, so avoiding too many cholesterol-rich foods is also a good idea. The best part — all of these steps are not only good for your eye health, but your general health as well.

The importance of pre-surgery testing

Achieving optimal eye surgery results can often come down to identifying the tiniest detail, which can mean a greater improvement in a LASIK or cataract patient’s vision. This is why Eye Consultants of Texas performs some of the most extensive patient testing in Dallas/Fort Worth, using the most advanced technology available.

Here are some examples of the type of pre-surgery tests we perform:

• To evaluate the surface and curvature of the cornea.
• To determine the power of an intraocular lens implant (IOL).
• To determine the precision of IOL measurements.
• To determine if macular degeneration is present.
• For aberrations (abnormalities) in the eye’s lens.
• Visual outcomes analysis.

There are other tests we perform, and which tests are required depends on the patient’s vision problem, health and type of surgery. Testing is individualized for each patient, and we take the time to ensure there are no other conditions that could compromise surgery results, or put our patient at risk.

The bottom line, of course, is to have the most accurate information in order to achieve the clearest vision possible. This means putting the patient’s health and wellbeing first, and going above and beyond in every way. Our pre-surgery testing is no different. To learn more please call us in Grapevine at 877-516-4364, convenient to Dallas/Fort Worth.

You’re Invited — Share Your Ideas for Telling the Total Health Story

This post is part of a campaign to invite feedback and ideas that will help inform the next generation of content for exhibits at the Center for Total Health.

The story of health care is ever changing.  And today, we invite you to help us determine how we tell that story at the Center for Total Health.

As we keep pace with the changing times and update the exhibits at our center, we’d like your assistance with designing the most compelling, interactive content.  Over the next four blog posts, we’ll ask for your feedback on how to tell particular aspects of our story on Total Health.  We’ll start with the largest display at the center, our marquee interactive video wall that currently features the benefits of walking.  If you haven’t experienced the wall in person, a picture of the current content is below.

Our question for you is this:  If you were to design an interactive wall on the topic of Total Health, what would it look like?  A couple of ideas are included below, but don’t let that limit you.  Build on the ideas you see and hear from others.  Your suggestions may inspire how we design the next generation of content.

Cataract Surgeon in Baltimore Discusses the Future of Advanced Procedures

Baltimore, MD — According to the latest statistics from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), cataracts affect nearly 22 million Americans age 40 and older. However, Dr. Jay C. Grochmal, a LASIK and cataract surgeon in Baltimore, says with the recent advancements in cataract surgery, patients do not have to let blurring vision hinder their daily life. Dr. Grochmal discusses the latest innovations in refractive-cataract surgery and how they can benefit patients looking to improve their vision.

At his Baltimore cataract surgery practice, Dr. Grochmal says the aging baby boomer population has brought an influx of patients needing vision correction for cataracts and other age-related conditions. Cataracts develop as people get older and are exhibited in a clouding and opaqueness of the natural lens inside one’s eye, causing vision to blur. The AAO report also shows that by age 80, more than half of all Americans will have visually significant cataracts. Dr. Grochmal says while cataracts can be a bothersome medical issue, the good news is that advancements in ophthalmology and surgical techniques have made clear vision an affordable and effective option through cataract surgery.

With procedures such as laser refractive cataract surgery on the horizon, Dr. Grochmal says treatment is now ultimately safer than ever before and more successful in helping patients achieve improved vision with less dependence on glasses. He says other innovations have helped create smaller incisions for lens extraction and replacement during cataract surgery, and through technology such as the Zeiss IOL Master, doctors can better measure the power of the intraocular lenses and offer more accurate visual results. “With the safety of cataract surgery improving, patients no longer have to wait for their vision to drastically deteriorate before undergoing cataract surgery. Also, the quality of newer IOL’s are allowing excellent vision after surgery,” says Dr. Grochmal.

Thanks to a diverse arsenal of lenses such as toric and multifocal IOL’s, Dr. Grochmal says patients can now enjoy the benefits of custom treatment for their individual eye condition and lifestyle needs. Whether patients wish to enhance their vision up close or far away or find a balance of clarity in both distance and near vision, he says there is a solution for every patient’s desires. Dr. Grochmal says cataract surgery recovery is now also much quicker and requires less trauma to the function of one’s eye. “With such small incisions now possible and the availability of toric IOL’s, post operative astigmatism can be minimized if not completely corrected,” he says.

Regardless of whether patients are looking for cataract surgery or another vision correction procedure such as LASIK in Baltimore, Dr. Grochmal says the advancements in ophthalmology are making significant strides towards helping people attain perfect, lasting eyesight. He adds that he is excited to see the further development of patient comfort and care and hopes patients continue to take advantage of the benefits that procedures like cataract surgery can offer.

About Jay C. Grochmal, MD

Dr. Jay C. Grochmal received his medical degree from the University of Maryland, after which he completed a rotating internship at the U.S. Public Health Hospital in Baltimore. He also completed a residency in the Department of Ophthalmology at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center, where he was Chief Resident. A member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Dr. Grochmal has participated in several medical mission trips to offer his experience and skills in vision correction to patients in Pakistan, Jamaica, and the Bahamas. Avoiding Computer Vision Syndrome

We all tend to spend a lot of time staring at a computer monitor, whether it’s for school, work, or leisure. We stare at the screen for hours almost every day, which can cause our eyes to inevitably feel strained or dry. The eye problems caused by computer use are categorized together into one condition known as computer vision syndrome (CVS), which affects over 50-90% of office workers.

CVS is a repetitive stress injury, meaning it is caused and worsened by routine motions over time. Some of its symptoms include blurred vision, dryness, redness, double vision, eye irritation, headaches, and neck or back pain. People who already suffer from other eye conditions are more likely to develop CVS, especially if they are not using a proper eye prescription. Many other factors contribute to the development of CVS, such as age and the computer itself—the brightness, angle of the monitor, position in relation to you, etc.

Let’s keep reading to see how we can prevent CVS.

5 Ways to Avoid Computer Vision Syndrome

  1. Reposition the computer. The screen should be facing you, not off to the side where you have to strain your eyes more to see it. The monitor should be between 4-8 inches under your eyes to keep the neck relaxed, and should be kept an arms length away from you.
  2. Blink. Blinking frequently should help you reduce dryness in your eyes. Another option for increasing moisture is the use of lubricating eye drops or a humidifier. Steer away from air vents, as those can help to further dry out the eye.
  3. Lighting. The lighting might be hurting your eyes as well. To check whether it is playing a part in your eye strain, cup your hands over your eyes like the cap of a baseball hat and observe whether your eyes feel better or not. If they do, you know you have to adjust the lighting to something more comfortable.
  4. Breaks. About every 15 minute while on the computer, you should take a small break and look anywhere but the screen. You can stand, stretch, or just stay in your seat looking away to give your eyes a good break.
  5. Regular check-ups. You may need a new or different prescription without even knowing it. Although you should get regular eye doctor visits anyway, your medical professional can help you prevent and treat CVS and many other harmful eye conditions.
