Baltimore Ophthalmologist Addresses the Importance of Routine Eye Exams

dr jay c grochmal, baltimore lasik, baltimore ophthalmologist, baltimore cataracts

At Grochmal Eye Center, ophthalmologist Dr. Jay C. Grochmal encourages patients to attend eye exams on a regular basis for the prevention and early detection of eye diseases.

Baltimore, MD - Dr. Jay C. Grochmal, an ophthalmologist in Baltimore, advises his patients at Grochmal Eye Center to schedule a regular eye exam every one to three years, depending on the age and health of the individual. By doing so, he is able to check for a variety of visual and muscular problems that can easily go undetected and permanently damage sight.

The frequency of exams depends on the needs of each patient and any pre-existing medical conditions. He recommends patients over 40 get a complete eye exam every two years, which is especially important for those with cataracts or glaucoma. For patients with diabetes, he advises more frequent eye exams with at least one per year to monitor any changes.

According to Dr. Grochmal, eye exams can be made less frequently with younger patients, as they have a lower risk of developing severe eye problems. He points out they can get by with an appointment every three years. At approximately age six, Dr. Grochmal encourages parents to set up a baseline exam for their children. However, if there is a family history of eye muscle problems and signs are apparent in the child, an exam should be made around age three or earlier.

“The reason for regular exams goes well beyond ‘good’ vision,” Dr Grochmal explains. He identifies these exams as preventative measures for his patients. Since many medical diseases have adverse signs within the eye, and inherent eye diseases can manifest silently, not showing many, if any symptoms early on, they can be progressing unchecked, causing needless damage. To detect problems early and prevent permanent damage, Dr. Grochmal performs a thorough inspection of his patients’ eyes.

During these exams, Dr. Grochmal monitors any visual or muscular changes. Depending on the patient’s unique case and whether they have undergone vision correction procedures such as LASIK or PRK, additional tests may be needed for effective disease prevention; but generally, patients can expect the following in a complete exam:

  • Vision check with and without glasses
  • Careful exam of the orbital area including eyelids
  • Eye muscle balance evaluation
  • Magnified exam of the eye interior from the cornea to the retina
  • Measurement of intraocular pressure

With their personal touch and advanced technology, Dr. Grochmal says the physicians at Grochmal Eye Center are helping preserve and improve patient eye health one routine screening at a time. Overall, he stresses the importance of frequent eye exams with an experienced and qualified ophthalmologist.

About Jay C. Grochmal, MD

In addition to his eye center, he is on the staff of top Baltimore hospitals, including the Greater Baltimore Medical Center and St. Agnes Hospital. Is Latisse™ Right for You?

Countless women have eyelashes that are either too light, too short, or lack fullness. To increase the appearance of their eyelashes, many people opt for fake eyelashes or lengthening mascaras.

However, FDA-approved Latisse™ offers a more permanent solution for eyelash fullness and length. Latisse also treats hypotrichosis, a condition which prevents hair growth.

Easy to use and painless, Latisse is applied to lashes nightly. Within weeks, your lashes will become noticeably fuller, longer, and thicker!

So, what makes Latisse different from other lash-enhancing products? For one thing, Latisse contains an ingredient called bimatoprost, which has been used in the past to treat the eye disease glaucoma. Bimatoprost helps stimulate hair growth on the lashes. Latisse is also the first eyelash-enhancing treatment to be approved by the FDA!

Before applying Latisse, make sure that you have removed all makeup and cosmetic eye products. It is also important to never use the same applicator for both eyes, and never use the same applicator for more than one night! Re-using an applicator could result in an eye infection or allergic reaction.

Latisse may not completely eliminate the need for cosmetic eye products, such as mascara. However, it will help your lashes become thicker, darker, and more youthful-looking. You should see your final results in about 16 weeks.

Although this treatment is safe and offers numerous benefits, Latisse may not be right for everyone. Patients who are pregnant, nursing, or who have previously had skin or eye infections may not be good candidates for Latisse. Ideal candidates are otherwise healthy adult patients who want to improve the appearance of their eyelashes, and have realistic expectations about the results of Latisse.

While side effects are rare, Latisse may have side-effects for some patients. Common side-effects include eye dryness, redness, and itchiness. Other potential side effects may include eyelid darkening and brown pigmentation of the iris. It is important to discuss these side-effects with your doctor, who will determine whether or not Latisse is right for you!

Grochmal Eye Center Adds Hi-Def Cirrus Laser Eye Surgery Technology

The Grochmal Eye Center is a Baltimore LASIK surgery practice, offering complete and comprehensive eyecare for the entire family. Dr. Jay C. Grochmal is announcing the addition of the Cirrus™ HD-OCT by Zeiss, which he says helps him visualize and analyze the status and health of the retina. In particular, the Cirrus™ technology allows him to assess the health of his patients’ eyes prior to performing a number of procedures, including traditional cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange.

The Grochmal Eye Center was founded in 1978, and continues to provide state-of-the-art eye care and laser eye surgery procedures, such as PRK and LASIK in Maryland under the leadership of Dr. Jay C. Grochmal. As part of their commitment to the cutting-edge of ophthalmic technology, Dr. Grochmal is announcing the latest addition to the practice: the Cirrus™ HD-OCT by Zeiss. He says the new technology will help him and his staff diagnose any changes in the macula caused by different diseases, such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or glaucoma. He adds that early detection of these diseases will enable him to start treatment before permanent vision loss occurs.

Zeiss is one of the world’s leading medical technology companies. Founder Carl Zeiss was the first to commercialize the OCT technology, and the first to deliver the high definition 3D maps created by the Cirrus™ HD-OCT. Dr. Grochmal says the new technology not only helps him detect potentially damaging eye conditions, but also helps him improve the overall level of care he can offer his patients. The printouts from the OCT are very helpful, according to Dr. Grochmal, as they aid in educating his patients and help them gain a better understanding of the disease and procedure.

Whether he is performing refractive or cataract surgery, LASIK or PRK, Dr. Grochmal says he and his team tirelessly pursue the latest advancements in eye care and laser eye surgery to ensure their patients receive the best care available. “The advancements in ophthalmology in just the last ten years are astounding; staying on top of these developments is essential to our continued dedication to providing state-of-the art treatment. Our patients deserve only the best, and that is what we constantly strive to offer.”

FLU SEASON 2013 – Nation Hit Hard By Influenza – Major Flu Outbreak Grips Nation

Every year, just after Thanksgiving to just before Valentine’s Day we are constantly bombarded with the above mentioned headlines. Every year we see news reports about shortages of the flu vaccine and we are told that this will be the worst year yet for people being susceptible to Influenza.

Let’s take a moment to logically examine how these headlines are repeated year after year.  What happens at the end of November?  Thanksgiving.  What do we do at Thanksgiving?  Well, if you’re like most people you have two (maybe even three) Thanksgiving dinners that you have to celebrate.  Usually you and your spouse go spend time with your family. Then the next day you spend a few hours driving across the state to go celebrate Thanksgiving with your spouses family. Sometimes you spend an extra Thanksgiving with close friends.  We all know what happens at Thanksgiving…we eat, eat, eat…loosen a notch on our belts, take a breather and go back to the kitchen to eat more.  Then we sit down to have an adult beverage or two (or three) while we watch sports with friends and loved ones.

After Thanksgiving we are still gorging on leftovers for two to three days.  Then the Christmas parties start.  Cookies, cakes, rum balls, sugar, sugar, and more sugar.  Plus, the two (or three) adult beverages just to be sociable.

Finally Christmas arrives.  This includes more food, more desserts, and more drinks. Usually you have two Christmases to attend (just like Thanksgiving).  At Christmas it seems that you encounter the cousin (and his wife) that you can’t stand (by the way, they don’t care too much for you either).  Then Grandma thinks that Uncle Joe is being hard on Billy. Uncle Joe wants Billy to be more like his sister Julie.  The stress builds up and to deal with the stress you eat more (because sometimes you’re an emotional eater) and you drink a little bit more (hey, it helps calm your nerves).

To reward yourself you decide to have a New Years Eve blowout extravaganza.  More food, more snacks, and A LOT more drinks.  You’ve already scheduled yourself off for January 2nd as January 1st happened during the middle of the week and you know that you’re going to be a little too exhausted to make it into work.  January 2nd you get yourself going with a couple of Bloody Mary’s (a little ‘hair of the dog’ never hurt anyone).  You start looking over your New Years Resolutions and you’re ready to conquer the world on January 3rd.  You’re on track with your resolutions for one week and then BOOM!!!  You’ve got The Flu!!!

You curse the flu.  How could this happen to me?  Why did this happen to me?!?  You’re sick, tired, and mad.  Darn you flu!

Whoa, wait a minute.  It’s not the flu’s fault.  It’s your fault.  Look at what you did to your body for the last 6 weeks. You’ve abused it.  You ate too much sugar, drank too much alcohol, been stressed out of your mind and then you ate even more.  It’s been shown that sugar, alcohol, and stress all lower the defenses of your immune system and make your body more susceptible to illness.

Your “inner terrain” was compromised.  Germs, “bugs”, and viruses are around us everyday.  It’s when our bodies become toxic and polluted from the overload of cookies, cakes, beer, wine, and mixed drinks that our immune system can’t work at optimal potential.

Let me be clear, I’m not telling you to not get a flu shot.  I am suggesting that you examine your dietary choices and how you handle stress.  I do believe that you can offer your body supplements that can help support your immune system.  One of those products is A.D.P.

A.D.P.

A.D.P. is a standardized extract of the oil of oregano, emulsified in a sustained release form.  My wife, Dr. Wendy Schauer, D.C., is a Doctor of Chiropractic, and she comes in contact with many patients during the Winter who are suffering from severe colds and flu.  She takes her A.D.P. to boost her immune system and she never “catches” the cold or flu from her patients.  (A.D.P. Is NOT recommended for pregnant or lactating women.)

I know that might sound like a little bit of “hype” to you.  I apologize if it does.  Here is an unsolicited testimonial from one of our clients, “CouchSurfing” Ori Bengal.

"CouchSurfing" Ori Bengal - Creator of 'Make WordPress Easy'

“CouchSurfing” Ori Bengal – Creator of ‘Make WordPress Easy’

“I have seen A.D.P. bring people back from the verge of turning into a full blown “flu zombie”. A.D.P. is the secret weapon that I use for myself, my family, and my friends to fend off against colds, the flu, and even the dreaded “airplane flu”. When I travel I don’t have time to get sick, that’s why I always carry A.D.P. in my luggage.”

Please remember during this time of year to take the extra time to be aware of your diet and stress.  You can only do good for your body by reducing the amount of sugar and alcohol that you put into your body.  For more information on “cleaning your inner terrain” and naturally boosting your immune system I suggest following the work of, Dr. Robert O. Young.  Here are links to two of his best selling books, “Sick and Tired” and “The PH Miracle”.

Major outbreak of Typhoid in Malawi

There have been 30,000 confirmed cases of typhoid fever each month so far this year at Malawi’s central hospital. This disease is spread by food or water contaminated with typhoid organisms (often as a result of inadequate handwashing by the cook or consumer).

Travellers should take care to with hand hygiene and source food or drink from clean and reputable establishments. Drink only water that is pure, and use it to clean the teeth as well.
There is a worldwide shortage of typhoid vaccine at present, and those travelling to areas where clean water is unobtainable should do their best to obtain the vaccine before travel.

Honoring our Nurses: National Nurses Week 2014

Where would we be without nurses — these extraordinary people who choose careers dedicated entirely to helping others when they are most vulnerable?

This being National Nurses Week, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the role these selfless caregivers play in our lives and the lives of those we hold most dear.

When I was hospitalized a few years ago, it was an ICU nurse named Renee who, when I woke up confused at night, held my hand and made me feel safe and secure — even through the fuzziness of my heavy sedation. And several days later, after the doctor had visited my bedside and told me recovery might be long and difficult, it was a nurse who saw the anxiety in my eyes and said, in a confident, reassuring, no-nonsense tone, “Patricia, you’re going to recover. You’re going to be fine.” My relief and shift in perspective were immediate. I believed her. I often think of how she said just what I needed to hear, when I needed to hear it, and I’m grateful.

Most of us have such stories, or tales of nurses who cared for our moms, our dads, our spouses or children. In honor of these caring individuals, Kaiser Permanente has developed a special site dedicated to the 2014 Nurses Week. The site features several nurse profiles as well as stories authored by nurses, themselves.

So: Here’s to nurses and all the good they do in this world.

What is the ReSTOR® Multifocal Lens?

Cataract surgery is among the most common surgical procedures in the country today. The majority of patients who undergo this procedure receive monofocal IOLs, which are lenses used to correct distance vision. While these lenses may successfully correct one’s long-distance vision, they do not provide any help with functional vision. That means that patients will be dependent on glasses or bifocals for basic tasks, such as reading  the newspaper. Fortunately, advanced ReSTOR Multifocal Lenses help patients enjoy completely clear vision - at any distance.

Let’s take a closer look at these cutting-edge practice:

  1. What are the ReSTOR Lens? The ReSTOR Multifocal Lens are implanted into the eye as a replacement for the natural lens of the eye during cataract surgery. They work like bifocal lenses inside of the eye, creating a clear image of the far away object while at the same time a second, defocused image is created for near vision. For near vision, the ReSTOR lens creates a clear, sharply focused near image. A patient’s vision is greatly improved through this method.
  2. Am I a good candidate for this procedure? Generally speaking, any adult over the age of 55 who either has cataracts or presbyopia (the loss of ability to refocus vision) is a candidate for this procedure. These patients are tired of being dependent on glasses or bifocals, though they are in otherwise good health. However, patients who have unrealistic expectations about the procedure, or who have occupations that require them to work at nighttime, are not considered good candidates for the procedure.
  3. What will happen following surgery? As with other implant procedures, patients can expect their vision to improve the next day. There is minimal discomfort following the surgery, and patients usually return to their normal activities within a day. Patients’ results are best when both eyes have the ReSTOR lenses implanted.

Eating your way to help reduce the risk of cataracts

From an early age, we’re told that carrots are good for our eyes. It’s no surprise that research has suggested a connection between nutrition and prevention of cataracts. Not only do we encourage a healthy diet for our Dallas/Fort Worth eye care patients, we may make nutritional recommendations as part of a patient’s treatment plan.

According to an allaboutvision article, several studies have been conducted revealing that diet may help reduce cataract risk. Below are highlights from the article:

• Carbohydrates: Researchers in Australia found that high carbohydrate diets may increase cataract risk. Published in Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, 2010.

• Vitamins & Minerals: A large study of adult women found that eating foods rich in vitamins and minerals may help delay cataract development (published in the Archives of Ophthalmology, 2010). Another study suggests that lutein, zeaxanthin and vitamin E from food and supplements “were associated with significantly decreased risk of cataract.” Lutein and zeaxanthin are found in green leafy vegetables and other foods, such as eggs.

• Antioxidants: A 10-year study of 2,400 older adults, also conducted in Australia, found that a combined intake of multiple antioxidants reduced the risk of cataracts. Published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2008.

Today, most doctors and experts agree, nutrition that benefits health including eye care, should come from a healthy diet. While supplements can help balance a diet lacking in nutrients, which is common for most Americans, consult with your doctor first to help you choose what’s right for you.

Study Shows ORA Can Improve Toric Lens Outcomes

On January 1, 2014, an Ophthalmology Times online article appeared about a study which showed ORA technology significantly improves refractive and visual outcomes after toric intraocular lens (IOL) implantation.

According to the article, “Intraoperative Aberrometry Adds Value in Toric IOL Surgery”, the study was conducted by Kathryn Hatch, MD and the clinical faculty at Brown Alpert Medical School in Providence, RI. The study compared traditional toric IOL implantation on 27 eyes with toric IOL implantation on 37 eyes where ORA’s intraoperative aberrometer was used.

The article outlines various postoperative measurements taken in the study approximately two months after surgery, stating that 67% of the aberrometry group and 39% of the traditional group achieving “unaided” distance vision of 20/25 or better.

Dr. Hatch was quoted in the article as saying, “We conducted this study because to our knowledge, there is no report in the peer-reviewed literature evaluating the use of intraoperative aberrometry with toric IOLs. Use of intraoperative aberrometry to guide intraoperative decisions improves outcomes.”

Eye Consultants of Texas founder Phillips Kirk Labor, MD is one of the top ORA surgeons in the U.S., and considered a leading IOL innovator. If you’re a cataract patient, or suspect you have cataracts, please call our office at 877-516-4364 to learn more. We’re located in Grapevine, convenient to all of Dallas/Fort Worth.

Grochmal Eye Center in the News with New Technology

LASIK, eye, surgery, surgeon, vision, correction, cirrus, baltimore, maryland, MD

Baltimore Eye Surgeon Discusses Revival in Popularity of PRK Surgery

lasik, surgeon, surgery, vision, correction, prk, baltimore, md

LASIK Surgeon in Baltimore on the Revival of PRK Surgery

According to a recent study by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, 800,000 refractive surgical procedures were performed in 2010. A similar study reports that among people age 40 and older, more than 3.6 million are visually impaired (defined as 20/40 or worse vision in the better eye even with eyeglasses). Dr. Jay C. Grochmal, a vision correction and LASIK surgeon in Baltimore, says that one of the contributing factors to such a high number of refractive surgical procedures is the resurgence in popularity of photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK. Dr. Grochmal discusses the benefits of a PRK procedure and reasons for its increasing demand.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) shows in its latest report that eye doctors performed 800,000 refractive surgical procedures in 2010. The AAO also indicates that more than 3.6 million people age 40 and older are visually impaired, or have 20/40 or worse vision in the better eye even with eyeglasses. At his Baltimore LASIK surgery and eye care practice, Dr. Jay C. Grochmal says many of his patients are choosing PRK surgery as an alternative to LASIK to correct their poor vision. He also says the procedure is rapidly growing in popularity again as patients are beginning to see the benefits it can offer for those who are not candidates for LASIK.

While LASIK surgery accrues more popular attention because of its well-known success and prevalence, Dr. Grochmal says PRK is extremely successful and can oftentimes be the best option for patients who meet certain criteria. Unlike LASIK, where a flap is created to perform the surgery, the surgeon removes the epithelial layer of the cornea and then reshapes the cornea using an excimer laser. Because the procedure does not involve flap creation on the eye, he says patients with thin corneas can often achieve the most effective results through a PRK procedure. Dr. Grochmal says the procedure can also work effectively for patients seeking enhancement of a previous LASIK procedure.

Dr. Grochmal says PRK can also be used for treatment of epithelial distrophy, or issues with the epithelium of the cornea. He adds that PRK’s other benefits include removal of scars on the cornea, strengthening the cornea through cross-linking, and reduced formation of scar tissue. “PRK uses the same laser as LASIK and is adaptable for ‘advanced’ procedures, such as CustomVue, in order to obtain the best visual results. For those with thin or borderline thickness corneas, as well as higher myopic refractive errors, PRK can be performed with the confidence of assuring the patient’s long-term corneal stability.”

While some patients may only qualify for either LASIK or PRK based on an assessment of their individual eye, Dr. Grochmal says both procedures have proven effective and successful. He also recommends consulting with a highly trained and experienced eye surgeon before undergoing any procedure. “Every patient is unique and requires individualized care. A surgeon experienced in PRK and LASIK can help guide the patient in the better treatment for him or her with the goal of preserving corneal health.”

Seeking Cataract Patients for Light Adjustable Lens (LAL®) Study

The Eye Consultants Research Foundation is currently participating in a U.S. investigational study on the Light Adjustable Lens to evaluate its safety and effectiveness for the treatment of cataracts. Although the LAL is similar in several respects to many standard monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs), the LAL is designed to potentially reduce or eliminate the need for glasses following cataract or lens replacement surgery. If cataracts are affecting your eyesight and interfering with your daily activities, you may be eligible for inclusion in a clinical study of the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL).

The Calhoun Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is an investigational device in the U.S., which means it has not yet been approved for sale in the U.S. by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and is limited by United States federal law to investigational use only.

For more information or to schedule an appointment, please contact our Study Coordinator Stacy Allen by calling 877-516-4364 at our Grapevine office. Or you may email her at sallen@eyecontx.com.

Eye Consultants of Texas has established the Eye Consultants Research Foundation to actively conduct clinical studies for a variety of eye diseases and conditions. By participating, patients in the DFW metro region will have access to medications and devices in clinical development that provide effective treatment of their particular disease or condition. Each participant receives advanced care from doctors who are experienced in conducting research in accordance with Good Clinical Practice.

Baltimore Laser Eye Surgeon Discusses the Future of Advanced Cataract Surgery

lasik,laser vision correction,cataract surgery,surgeon,baltimore md

Cataract Surgeon in Baltimore Discusses the Future of Advanced Procedures

Baltimore, MD — According to the latest statistics from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), cataracts affect nearly 22 million Americans age 40 and older. However, Dr. Jay C. Grochmal, a LASIK and cataract surgeon in Baltimore, says with the recent advancements in cataract surgery, patients do not have to let blurring vision hinder their daily life. Dr. Grochmal discusses the latest innovations in refractive-cataract surgery and how they can benefit patients looking to improve their vision.

At his Baltimore cataract surgery practice, Dr. Grochmal says the aging baby boomer population has brought an influx of patients needing vision correction for cataracts and other age-related conditions. Cataracts develop as people get older and are exhibited in a clouding and opaqueness of the natural lens inside one’s eye, causing vision to blur. The AAO report also shows that by age 80, more than half of all Americans will have visually significant cataracts. Dr. Grochmal says while cataracts can be a bothersome medical issue, the good news is that advancements in ophthalmology and surgical techniques have made clear vision an affordable and effective option through cataract surgery.

With procedures such as laser refractive cataract surgery on the horizon, Dr. Grochmal says treatment is now ultimately safer than ever before and more successful in helping patients achieve improved vision with less dependence on glasses. He says other innovations have helped create smaller incisions for lens extraction and replacement during cataract surgery, and through technology such as the Zeiss IOL Master, doctors can better measure the power of the intraocular lenses and offer more accurate visual results. “With the safety of cataract surgery improving, patients no longer have to wait for their vision to drastically deteriorate before undergoing cataract surgery. Also, the quality of newer IOL’s are allowing excellent vision after surgery,” says Dr. Grochmal.

Thanks to a diverse arsenal of lenses such as toric and multifocal IOL’s, Dr. Grochmal says patients can now enjoy the benefits of custom treatment for their individual eye condition and lifestyle needs. Whether patients wish to enhance their vision up close or far away or find a balance of clarity in both distance and near vision, he says there is a solution for every patient’s desires. Dr. Grochmal says cataract surgery recovery is now also much quicker and requires less trauma to the function of one’s eye. “With such small incisions now possible and the availability of toric IOL’s, post operative astigmatism can be minimized if not completely corrected,” he says.

Regardless of whether patients are looking for cataract surgery or another vision correction procedure such as LASIK in Baltimore, Dr. Grochmal says the advancements in ophthalmology are making significant strides towards helping people attain perfect, lasting eyesight. He adds that he is excited to see the further development of patient comfort and care and hopes patients continue to take advantage of the benefits that procedures like cataract surgery can offer.
